Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong)

0607

Lingnan University, what was then called Canton Christian College, was founded in 1888 in Guangzhou by Rev. Andrew P. Happer from the Board of Foreign Missions of the U.S. Presbyterian Church.

The college provided western-style education, comprised of liberal arts, science, engineering, medicine and agriculture. The curriculum was widely welcomed by squires from southern China and overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and the college’s reputation gradually spread far and wide. In 1927, the college was renamed Lingnan Daxue in Chinese and Lingnan University in English.

After the succession of Dr. Chung Wing-kwong as the first Chinese president, the University was committed to strive for the highest standards. Apart from developing campus and facilities, it opened branch schools in many places including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, and Annan (now Vietnam).

President Chung Wing-Kwong encouraged students to form alumni associations. With the development of branch schools of the University, various alumni associations were gradually established in many cities including the Hong Kong Branch of Lingnan Alumni Association (the former name at that time). In 1960, it was officially registered as a corporate body in Hong Kong, and renamed "Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong)”.

Once a Lingnanian, Always a Lingnanian, a saying cherished by all Lingnanians. The mandate of LUAA (Hong Kong) is to strengthen the bond among members of the Lingnan family, to embrace Lingnan spirit and to serve the community. From strength to strength, the Association is committed to realise the precept “For God, for Country, and for Lingnan” and live up to the motto “Education for Service” as well as the “blood-red and iron-grey” spirit symbolizing loyalty and steadfastness.
